Never a losing record at any single stage — Stockfish's only regression happened mid-tournament (1 loss each in Group H and the Round of 16), and it played its highest-percentage chess in the group stage before tightening up into pure damage-control mode for the knockout rounds, exactly what a favorite grinding through a long bracket should look like.

Reckless's only 3 losses of the entire 156-game tournament all came in the Grande Final — a perfect record everywhere else, broken exactly when it mattered most. Zero losses across Group H, R32, R16, QF, and SF combined (124 games) is the single cleanest run of the whole event.
The numbers line up cleanly here: Stockfish finishes with the highest Live Elo of any engine in the field (3094,3), comfortably ahead of Reckless (3070,6) — the champion is the champion by every measure, not just tournament points. Interestingly, Stockfish's rating actually dipped slightly over the event (-5,7, from a starting 3100,0) — it entered as the highest-rated engine by a wide margin and, even playing at a 62% clip, slightly underperformed its own lofty expectation. Reckless barely moved (+0,6, from 3070,0) — a near-perfectly flat tournament until three losses in the Final. Both finalists were, and remained, the two strongest engines in the 32-engine field throughout.

Two footnotes worth having on record: Houdini 6.03 finished 38th of 48 (36 games, 29,1%) — the sole classical-era engine in the field, included by design as the historical baseline the whole "100:1 Time Odds Massacre" project was built around; its result here is separate from that handicap experiment and reflects level-terms play. And bottom of the table, Laser finishes 48/48 at 2,7% — a single win-equivalent (1,0 points) from 36 games.
By Elo, about as fair as a knockout bracket gets. The champion, runner-up, and 3rd place finisher are the #1, #2, and #3 rated engines of the entire 32-engine field, in that exact order. 4th place (Alexandria, Elo #5) is the only "miss" — and only because the true #4 (Obsidian, 3046) lost the Quarter-Final to Alexandria by a single Elo point, a coin flip in all but name.
What the draw did not do is Elo-seed the bracket to keep strong engines apart. Two genuine top-10 collisions happened absurdly early: Reckless (#2) eliminated Viridithas (tied for #6, 3010) in the Round of 16, and PlentyChess (#3) eliminated Pawnocchio (#8, 3005) in the same round — both engines strong enough to have reasonably expected a Quarter-Final run, gone before the final eight. Meanwhile Tarnished (2980) and Halogen (2970) — well outside the top 8 — rode comparatively soft paths into the Quarter-Finals.
Net verdict: the bracket had real luck baked into it — who you meet early matters as much as how strong you are — but the cream still rose. Across 30 knockout matches, the Elo favorite won 28 times (93,3%); across the two Final-weekend matches, it went 2 for 2. The engines that were actually best on paper are exactly the engines holding the trophy — and by final Live Elo too (see Head-to-Head above), Stockfish clearly finishes as the strongest engine in the field. This is as clean a validation as a knockout format can produce.

Argentina beat England 2-1 in the real Semi-Final on July 15, exactly as the earlier Shadow Bracket report hoped for — setting up the same Final pairing, Spain vs Argentina, as WCCE's own Grande Final. England then took real bronze by beating France 6-4. Spain went on to win the real Final 1-0 — the exact same nation, in the exact same pairing, that Stockfish carried to the WCCE title.

Called two weeks ago, and it held all the way through: the WCCE Grande Final pairing — Spain vs Argentina — was the exact same pairing as the real World Cup Final, and Spain won both. Stockfish beat Reckless 3-0-29 in the chess bracket; Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in reality. Two completely independent processes — one running on chess Elo, the other on actual football — converged on the same nation lifting the trophy.
The podium diverges everywhere else, though. Brazil is the clearest split: real Brazil was eliminated in the Round of 16 by Norway, while Alexandria (Brazil's mirror engine) played all the way to 4th place — a run the real team never got close to. And the bronze medal goes to different countries entirely: WCCE gives it to France, reality gives it to England, who beat France 6-4 in a real shootout-style scoreline that had no equivalent drama in the chess bracket's calmer 4-2 finish.
Updated now that the real Final has been played — every one of the 32 bracket slots is resolved, both in WCCE and in reality.
Halogen (Iran) over RubiChess (United States), Round of 16 — RubiChess held a slight Elo edge (2984 vs 2980) and a clear FIFA-rank edge (US 1673 vs Iran 1615), and lost anyway. The only match all tournament where both signals agreed on a favorite that then lost.
Alexandria (Brazil) over Obsidian (England), Quarter-Final — decided by a single Elo point pre-match, and Alexandria rode that coin flip all the way to 4th place in the whole tournament.
Brazil out in the Round of 16 — lost 1-2 to Norway, the tournament's earliest exit for a traditional powerhouse nation among the teams this mirror tracked.
USA 1-4 Belgium, Round of 16 and Norway pushing England to extra time in the Quarter-Final (1-2) were the widest and narrowest knockout margins respectively among the teams whose engines made this mirror.
